When natural is the right call
Three cases where I steer clients toward mined stones:
- Sentiment about rarity. A natural stone spent a billion years underground. For some people that story is the entire point of the object, and no spec sheet argues with it. That is a legitimate reason to buy one.
- Value retention. Natural diamonds are not the investment the twentieth century advertised, but they hold value far better than lab-grown, whose prices structurally decline as production scales. If eventual resale or heirloom value matters to you, natural is the defensible choice.
- Estate and vintage work. Reworking inherited pieces means working with natural stones by definition, and it is some of the most meaningful bespoke work I do.
The honest part that protects your wallet
A natural stone and a lab stone with matching certificates are visually and chemically identical. What you are paying the natural premium for is provenance and rarity, not beauty. Know that, decide it is worth it to you, and then pay trade price for it, not retail price. Buying natural safely in Bangkok
- GIA certification is the standard for natural stones, with the number inscribed on the girdle. Verify it online before your balance moves.
- Insist the certificate states natural. An honest trade discloses stone origin without being asked. Any ambiguity is your cue to leave.
- Itemized quotes, CAD approval, balance after QC. Same rules as all my custom work.
