CVD is one of those industry acronyms that gets thrown around showrooms to sound technical. Let me actually explain it, because once you understand what a CVD diamond is, a lot of pricing games stop working on you.
What CVD actually means
CVD stands for chemical vapor deposition. A thin diamond seed goes into a vacuum chamber filled with carbon rich gas. The gas is energized into plasma, carbon atoms rain down onto the seed, and a diamond grows layer by layer over a few weeks. The result is a real diamond. Same carbon, same crystal structure, same hardness, same fire. Not a simulant, not moissanite, not cubic zirconia. A diamond.
CVD vs HPHT, in one honest paragraph
The other growing method is HPHT, high pressure high temperature, which mimics the crush of the earth's mantle. Both produce real diamonds. CVD tends to excel at the larger, higher clarity stones that engagement rings want, and it is what I primarily stock. In practice, for a certified stone of given specs, the growth method matters far less than the certificate. Judge the stone, not the acronym.
Why Bangkok is the smart place to buy CVD
Bangkok sits close to the major growing regions and has the cutting and manufacturing infrastructure to turn rough into finished certified stones. Working from the Jewelry Trade Center, I buy CVD stones one or two steps from the source. By the time the same stone reaches a Western retail case it has passed through an importer, a distributor and a brand, each taking margin. That chain is most of the price difference, and the markup autopsy on my homepage shows it line by line.
How to buy a CVD diamond without getting played
- IGI or GIA certificate, always. The certificate states the stone is laboratory grown, lists the 4Cs, and the number is inscribed on the girdle. Verify it online yourself.
- Ask about post growth treatment. Some CVD stones are HPHT treated after growth to improve color. This is normal and disclosed on honest certificates. Undisclosed treatment is the red flag, not treatment itself.
- Compare per certificate, not per shop. Two stones with matching certificates are commodities. If one costs double, you are paying for the seller's overhead.
